One of my readers* sent me an article about the most annoying phrases in America.
First place winner: “Whatever”
Second place: “You know?”
Third place: “It is what it is.”
Forth place: “Anyway”…
Hold on… back up!! What?!? The expression I felt so wonderfully expressed my state of being, the phrase I have steadfastly defended from my Aussie, the utterance upon whose shoulders I carefully crafted my beloved blog is the third most annoying expression in America?
Thankfully, only 11% of respondents chose to libel my inspiration, but nevertheless, I feel the need to defend my chose phrase.
People! “It is what it is” is only annoying if you view it as a surrender! If you expand it, give it someplace to go — as in “it is what it is, and there’s no changing that, but now we can…” — well, then, it’s pure motivation! By accepting what is, you can then move on to what can be, and, well, I can’t think of a better starting point than that!
(climbing off my soapbox)
So, if you’re one of the 11% of Americans who get annoyed by someone saying this perfectly crafted phrase, give them a break. At least they didn’t say “”WHAT’-ehv-errr!”
*SIDE NOTE: This reader was not, of course, telling me that HE thought the phrase was annoying. He was just helping me to fight evil. 😉
